Jersey Rain by Robert Pinsky,
Cathartic, refreshing new work by the American favorite "Tiptoe on the globe. Stone wheel that sharpens the blade that mows the grain, Wheel of the sunflower turning, wheel that turnsThe spiral press that squeezes the oil expressedFrom shale or olives. Particles that turn mudOn the potter's wheel that spins to form the vesselThat holds the oil that drips to cool the blade.--from "Biography"Jersey Rain takes up a central American subject: the emotional power of inventions, devices, and homemade imaginings -- from the alphabet and the lyre through the steel drum and piano to the record player, digital computer, and television. Formally innovative and highly readable poems like "ABC," "Ode to Meaning," "To Television," and "The Green Piano" meditate a life guided by the quick, artful tinkerer-god Hermes: deity of music and deception, escort of the dead, inventor of instruments, brilliant messenger, and trickster of heaven. "Tiptoe on the globe. " Gazing "nowhere in particular, the slender "Thunderer surrounded by thunder, "Fire zigzag in his grasp, labeled "Spirit "Of Communication"---unhistorical, "Pure, the merciless messenger. --from "A Phonebook Cover Hermes of the Nineteen-forties" "Jersey Rain -- at once complex and aboveboard -- marks a new, strong, lyrical stage of Robert Pinsky's work. Assembled here are poems -- some ofthe finest of his career -- that together compose a sweeping and embattled meditation on the themes of a life guided by Hermes: deity of music and deception, escort of the dead, inventor of instruments, brilliant messenger and trickster of heaven.

Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter by William Sloan,
Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter by William Sloan,
"Sibusiso Mbhele and His Fish Helicopter" is a cinematic look at the life and work of a visionary South African outsider artist who sparked the jealousy, wrath, and ultimate rejection of his own community with his wondrous creations of scrap metal flying machines. Based on his eponymous film originally screened in 2000 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Koto Bolofo's first monograph documents a young talented South African sculptor forced to flee his rural home -- a full-sized, hand-built metal facsimile of a helicopter that created an odd sight against a background of traditional thatched huts in his African village. Self-taught, Mbhele earned his living creating scrap metal sculptures of planes, cars, and bicycles from wire, car wrecks, oil tin drums, and other recycled materials. After making the headlines of the local newspapers, Mbhele's neighbors, jealous of his recognition and success, destroyed his creations and his beloved helicopter home. They had him jailed, and though he was later released, the tension and threat of further trouble was enough to make Mbhele take flight from his precious helicopter haven and head for the security of the city and the unknown.
