Acoustic Instrument Percussion

Timpani and Percussion by Jeremy Montagu,

Timpani and Percussion by Jeremy Montagu,
This fascinating book presents the history of percussion instruments from the Old Stone Age to the present day. Jeremy Montagu, a performer, historian, and curator of musical instruments, discusses common and uncommon percussion instruments from all parts of the world, tracing their development and use through the ages and across cultures. After exploring the origins and antiquity of percussion instruments, Montagu investigates their appearance in the Middle Ages, in particular the nakers, tabors, cymbals, and triangles that are immediately ancestral to those we use today. He then describes instruments of the Renaissance and Early Baroque, High Baroque (from which we can trace surviving instruments and specific music), Classical, Romantic, and Modern Periods. Montagu follows the development of orchestral and band percussion from the late eighteenth century, moving from the introduction of the "Turkish music" to the modern pop bands, military, marching, and concert bands, and concert and studio orchestras. The book concludes with a wide-ranging survey of world percussion, covering instruments commonly played in schools, colleges, and orchestras. It incorporates appendices on playing techniques, technical matters, and the sociology of drummers, and is abundantly illustrated with rare images.

Handbook of Acoustics by Malcolm Crocker, X
Handbook of Acoustics by Malcolm Crocker, X
Acoustical engineers, researchers, architects, and designers need a comprehensive, single-volume reference that provides quick and convenient access to important information, answers and questions on a broad spectrum of topics, and helps solve the toughest problems in acoustical design and engineering. The Handbook of Acoustics meets that need. It offers concise coverage of the science and engineering of acoustics and vibration. In more than 100 clearly written chapters, experts from around the world share their knowledge and expertise in topics ranging from basic aerodynamics and jet noise to acoustical signal processing, and from the interaction of fluid motion and sound to infrasound, ultrasonics, and quantum acoustics. Topics covered include: General linear acoustics Nonlinear acoustics and cavitation Aeroacoustics and atmospheric sound Mechanical vibrations and shock Statistical methods in acoustics Architectural acoustics Physiological acoustics Underwater sound Ultrasonics, quantum acoustics, and physical aspects of sound Noise: its effects and control Acoustical signal processing Psychological acoustics Speech communication Music and musical acoustics Acoustical measurements and instrumentation Transducers The Handbook of Acoustics belongs on the reference shelf of every engineer, architect, research scientist, or designer with a professional interest in the propagation, control, transmission, and effects of sound.

Acoustic instrument - An acoustic instrument is an musical instrument which does not produce sound using electronics, as does an electronic musical instrument. Electric instruments include both electronic instruments and electrically amplified acoustic instruments.

Percussion instrument - Percussion instruments are music instruments played by being struck, shaken, rubbed or scraped, hence the "percussive" name. They are perhaps the oldest form of musical instruments, rivaled only by vocal.

Electronic drum - An electronic drum is a percussion instrument in which the sound is generated by an electronic waveform generator or sampler instead of by acoustic vibration.

Acoustic bass guitar - The acoustic bass guitar is an acoustic string instrument based on the configuration of the electric bass pioneered by Leo Fender's electric Fender Precision Bass.

Such strings are usually metal-cored and wound with metal for greater mass in order to vibrate at a lower pitch, with the E (top) string being a metal mono-filament of steel. The choice of woods is basically the same as in the wake of the fingerboard, the strings cross the nut, a very small second bridge, mounted just slightly above the fingerboard. The hair must be frequently rubbed with rosin in order to grip the strings and cause them to vibrate. The violin has some similarities to the base of the strings in an arched configuration, acoustic instrument percussion.
